Questions Answered Pt. 2

Do you recall and I’m sure you do any special highlights of your college and professional football career? I’m curious because there’s always something significant happening in peoples’ lives. Appreciate it. Thanks! Merry Christmas!
Yes I do recall many, the biggest highlight of college was just making it through all four years, and as for playing professionally, I couldn’t choose a moment, each and every part was very special to me.

I am an avid Cowboys memorabilia collector. I have been a fan for 42 of my 47 years. What is one piece of memorabilia from your playing days that you value the most?
Thanks for this opportunity and God Bless.

I would have to say my helmet. You can buy cards and pictures but my helmet couldn’t be replaced.

Mr. Niland:
I was so saddened to hear of Don Meredith’s passing.
I wish he had written his biography because he had so many fans who would love to know more about him. I understand you are writing your biography and I am very happy to hear that. Can you tell us how it’s going, do you have a publisher, and when might it be printed?
I’m a fan of the “old school” Cowboys. Guys like yourself, Meredith, Don Perkins, Bob Lilly, Bob Hayes, etc. are the ones who truly turned the Cowboys into “America’s Team”. I would love to read more about your own background and your time with the Cowboys of the 60s.
Best wishes to you and your family — may you have a Blessed Christmas!
Fred Goodwin

My book should be out sometime next year, I will continue to update everyone about it as time goes on. I have someone writing and gathering all the information for me and she is doing a great job so far. Everything about my life will be in my book, so when you read it you will find out a lot of things you may have not known.

Questions Answered

John, may I ask if you sign autographs via the mail? And if so, how can I find you?
Thanks again!

I charge 10 dollars for an autograph and I donate that money to my favorite charities. You can send it to 2646 Rodney Lane, Dallas, TX 75229 and I will return it promptly if you include a return prepaid envelope.

Hi John!
Its an honor to ask you a question! I wanted to know what your favorite memory, most significant memory playing for the Cowboys? Also, who did you enjoy playing with the most or for?
Thanks for your legacy!
A lifelong Cowboys fan,

My favorite memory was having my parents see me play before they passed. My most significant memory was Super Bowl V, against the Baltimore Colts. I enjoyed playing with Don Meredith, I missed a block against the Washington Redskins defensive player and that put Meredith out of the game with a bone crushing tackle and Don retired that same year. Crying after the game I thought “shame on me”.

I am glad for the win but I am still worried about this team’s defense. I hope we can find some DB help in the draft. What do you think is the team’s biggest weakness?

Leadership, defiantly leadership.

December 19th Game

What a great game! A great start to the Christmas week. That was an awesome game for Austin and Witten, great catches guys.

I hope everyone has a great Christmas, and I wish the best for all of you.

Dallas Morning News

The Dallas Morning News had a front page story about Don Meredith. I thought I would share this picture with anyone that doesn’t live in Dallas, enjoy.

Don Meredith

I was so saddened to hear of Don Meredith’s death today. He was the first football leader that I really appreciated working with, but I am still bitter because I am the reason he had to retire. A few years back at the the Tom Laundry reunion at Texas Stadium I remember going up to him about to shake his hand and I couldn’t help but cry when I looked down. He saw my grief as I said “Don, I am so sorry I missed that block” so which he graciously replied “What missed block?”. He was the kind of guy that would look to us for answers and plays in the huddle as we crowed around each other like children playing in the street.

He was one of the greatest, and will be forever missed. My condolences to family and friends of Don.

Week of December 6th

Hello everyone, I hope you are all having a great holiday season. I found this recently and thought I would share it with all of you. Its a Packers contract very similar to the one I signed. (click on the photos twice to view a larger size)

Ahh.. how times change. I love the “$150 per game part” thats practically pocket change to the players now. I also like “We will gladly increase the amount of this contract as soon as you are playing the kind of ball deserving more money.” Someone needs to put that back in modern contracts.

I have failed to mention in my earlier posts that I am in the process of writing a book! Well, should I say my good friend Jody Perry is writing it. She is so far doing a great job and has interviewed so many people I have already lost count. I can not wait for it to be finished for all of you. She has her own website which you can visit and read about her. . She also has another website where she talks about “her love affair with Santa Barbara”; she gives the scoop on all the best beaches, stores and other nooks and crannies of Santa Barbara only the locals know about.

My thoughts on the Thanksgiving Day game aganist the Saints

All I can say is take the money back from Miles Austin. You have seen and discovered that Austin can not catch with a pocket full of money. We let this one slip though our fingers, we could have won easily. The life expectancy of a kicker is about 12 weeks, goodbye Beuhler.

What did you guys think?

Week of November 22nd

Hello everyone! I hope you all are having a great Thanksgiving week. I’m not going to the game this year but I will defiantly be watching at home with my family while we eat, a lot. Its freezing here in Dallas, its interesting, yesterday it was 80 and today its 40. But that’s Dallas for ya. I’ll be updating later this week again since this is such a short post.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Week of November 15th

Hello everyone and welcome to my new website! This is officially my first post with many more to come. I have been wanting a website for a long time and finally got around to getting the help to start one. I plan to update every week about the things I am doing and the progress of my book. I will also be sharing my thoughts on some Cowboy news as well!

To start off I would like to say thank you for naming me one of the Top Dallas Cowboy’s Players! You can visit the article here.

I also did an interview with which you can watch here.

The weekend of Halloween I went to the 2010 Arthritis Foundation Bone Bash. I took my whole family and had a lot of fun. I got to do a short speech supporting the foundation  and all that they do. If you get the chance you should check out their website and donate, it is a really great cause that I stand for 100%.

Bone Bash

I also recently signed some Cowboy Stadium chairs for Kids Matter, a great non-profit organization “whose mission is to empower youth and families with tools to effectively manage the stressors of everyday life through programming, education, and collaboration.” You can visit their website as well. Here are some photos of the chairs.

I thought it was kind of funny that they gave me number 7 and 6.

I met Jen Wenter at a signing recently. Shes a great Pro Football player..AND shes a girl! Check her out at, its really cool to know there are some girl players out there with as much ambition to play as some men.

I am taking some Cowboy fans on Sunday to the game, they won an auction at the Bone Bash and I am delighted to take them! Im off to get my car ready, I will be personally picking them up and taking them to the stadium. Hopefully the Boys will step their game up!! I have added tons of new photos to the “John Niland Photos” tab at the top of the website for all of ya’ll.
